SUMMARY:Member webinar: Preprints and publishing
DESCRIPTION:Member webinar: Preprints and publishing\n2020 and 2021 were a watershed period for publishing when the use of preprints (i.e. articles posted before formal review) became a normalised activity for many researchers. Although used extensively in several communities for many years (e.g. on the ArXiv.org site) it is their use in the biomedical sciences which has proved momentous for publishing. However\, they are not without problems and this presentation will consider the place of preprints within the academic and conference ecosystem\, and consider how they are used – and abused – in the dissemination of research information within academia and among the wider public. \n  \n

SUMMARY:EASE member exclusive - Cell Press inclusion and diversity statement initiative webinar
DESCRIPTION:Following her successful presentation at the EASE Virtual conference in June\, Deborah Sweet of Cell Press has kindly agreed to describe their Inclusion and Diversity Statement initiative in more detail\, with additional information from recent months. \nThe initiative encourages authors to highlight aspects of the paper that are relevant for inclusion and diversity. It is purposely multifunctional and designed to give authors a venue to share ways in which their work or their research group\, or both\, are contributing to help science become more inclusive and diverse overall.  Authors who choose to participate have the option of providing information only for aggregated reporting or also including a templated statement in their published paper. This presentation will describe development of this overall approach\, the form used to collect data\, and preliminary assessment of the information being reported by authors. \nDeborah Sweet\nVice President of Editorial at Cell Press. \nDr. Sweet earned her BA from the University of Cambridge\, UK\, and her PhD at the MRC Laboratory of Molecular Biology\, also in Cambridge\, then carried out postdoctoral work at The Scripps Research Institute in La Jolla\, California\, USA. She began her publishing career in 1996 as the Editor of Trends in Cell Biology and then joined Cell Press in 1999\, where she held scientific editorial positions on Cell\, Molecular Cell\, and Developmental Cell before becoming the Editor-in-Chief of Developmental Cell in 2004.  She was the launch Editor-in-Chief for Cell Stem Cell in 2007 and held that position for 10 years.  In 2011 Dr. Sweet became one of the Cell Press Publishing Directors and then in 2017 the Vice President of Editorial.  In this role she is responsible for leading an in-house editorial team with over 160 members and contributing to the broader strategic direction of Cell Press. \nRegistration (open to EASE members only)\nhttps://us02web.zoom.us/webinar/register/WN_olK46B9fRR282RDHvhpCzQ

SUMMARY:EASE member exclusive: Numbers in formation webinar
DESCRIPTION:Autumn webinar series – starting 14 September 2021\nNumbers in Formation: Reader-Friendly Organization of Numerical Data into Tables\nPresented by Yateen Joshi\, EASE Council member and Chair of Training Committee\nTuesday\, 14 September 2021\, 12pm (UK time) \nGenerating first-hand data from experiments or from surveys is at the heart of research. Having put in so much effort to get those data in the first place\, some authors are reluctant to let go of even a scrap of data and some simply present the numbers – offload them\, really – as collected. Editors\, however\, may need to trim some data or organize the numbers differently to help readers to get a quick overview of the table and to understand the implications of the data. The proposed session answers the following and other similar questions that mid-career editors often ask.\n# How can I make tables more compact?\n# Which is the correct alignment for numbers in a column?\n# How do I indicate missing data?\n# How do I choose between a chart or a graph and a table?\n# Where do I place footnotes to a table\, at the foot of the table or at the foot of the page on which the table appears? \nRegistration open to EASE members only

SUMMARY:36th International Geological Congress
DESCRIPTION:Given the current status of the Covid-10 pandemic\, it appears unlikely that the 36th IGC can be held as rescheduled to November 2020.  Accordingly\, the Local Organizing Committee requested and the IGC Committee (IGCC) approved revised dates of 16-21 August 2021.  Scheduling was constrained by the limited availability of the venue site in New Delhi in 2021.  The IUGS Executive Committee and its constituent groups will work hard to ensure the success of the rescheduled Congress. \n  \nUnder consideration by the IUGS Executive Committee is the call for an extraordinary session of the IUGS-IGC Council\, possibly to be held in Paris\, France in early November for the purpose of completing essential business\, such as the election of a new executive committee.  If held\, the agenda and number of participants will be limited with most delegates participating via teleconferencing.  Inquiries are just being made.  No announcement will be made until facilities\, location\, and dates are confirmed and approved by the EC.

SUMMARY:15th EASE General Assembly and Conference
DESCRIPTION:In the light of the continuing uncertainties caused by the COVID-19 pandemic\, the EASE Council have announced that the 15th EASE General Assembly and Conference will be held virtually from 23-25 June 2021. The theme of the conference is Promoting sustainability in scholarly publishing: the role of editors \nThe 2021 EASE conference will focus on two issues paramount in science publishing: sustainability and diversity. \n2020 was a turning point in science communication with the global pandemic revealing the limitations of our current models and raising questions about how we\, as editors can – and should – influence scientific communication. \nSustainability\, in terms of managing the Earth’s resources\, is often considered to be unrelated to editorial and research activities; but careful husbandry of available resources is at the heart of a sustainable scientific ecosystem. As editors we need to investigate how we can promote more sustainable research and equable systems of communication\, and we need to carefully consider our influence on research that respects the Earth’s resources. Implicit is the need to ensure diversity\, and to avoid niche publishing that excludes participation and partnership around the world\, and which overstretches available resources. \nThese vital topics will be considered by key speakers at the conference\, and delegates will participate in debates via the EASE Forum Live! sessions. \nThe programme will include presentations\, case studies and discussions on the following topics: \n\nThe challenges of publishing in a world of politicised science\nThe environmental responsibilities of publishers and editors\nThe importance of technology to support sustainable local journal publishing\nPromoting and ensuring sustainable research\nEnsuring gender equity and inclusion\nWhy geographical diversity is needed\nWhat the pandemic has taught us about sustainability\nHow the current western and northern publishing bias can be changed\nWhat editorial roles will look like in the future.\n\nEach session will include consideration of one or more of the UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) to question how the work\, experiences and behaviors of editors\, publishers and researchers can influence and help to achieve the SDGs. \nVisit the Conference webpages for more details \nPlease direct all enquiries to the Secretary secretary@ease.org.uk

SUMMARY:Peer Review Week - Trust in Peer Review
DESCRIPTION:This year’s Peer Review Week (PRW)\, a yearly event led by academic publishers and societies\, as well as other scholarly organizations\, is dedicated to “Trust in Peer Review.” During the week of September 21 – 25\, participating organizations will highlight the critical role of peer review in research with a week of virtual events and activities. \nThe importance of reliable scholarly publications has rarely been as public or pressing as now\, with the world in the throes of the COVID-19 pandemic. Maintaining trust in the peer review decision-making process is paramount if we are to solve the world’s most pressing problems. This global\, week-long event will shine a light on how the peer review process works and why it helps build trust in research. \n“Research contributions — on climate change\, poverty\, disease\, or any of the other challenges we face — have an important impact on people’s lives. It’s vital for researchers\, the public\, and policymakers to know whether and\, if so\, how the research they’re relying on has been evaluated and tested\,” says Phil Hurst of The Royal Society\, co-chair of the Peer Review Week steering group. \n“Every year\, Peer Review Week puts a spotlight on the essential work that often goes on behind the scenes\, yet plays a critical role in ensuring accuracy in the scientific and research process. By drawing attention to the issue of ‘trust’ we hope that this year’s PRW will stimulate discussions and further initiatives that will ultimately lead to strengthening the scientific record\,” says Lou Peck of The International Bunch\, Phil’s co-chair. \nIn this time of uncertainty\, ensuring that peer review is trustworthy has never been more urgent. We invite all scholarly and scientific societies\, researchers\, editors\, publishers\, libraries\, universities\, funders\, and anyone interested in the advancement of high-quality research to join us during Peer Review Week for this celebration and learning experience.
