SUMMARY:University Press Redux Conference 2022
DESCRIPTION:University Press Redux Conference 2022 to focus on diversity and sustainability \n\nEvent will tackle pressing global issues\nOrganisers aim to widen participation\, both geographically and financially\nUniversity Press Redux Sustainability Award to be presented for second year\n\nThe fourth University Press Redux conference will take place virtually in 2022 as the organisers open it up to a wider audience. \nRun by the Association of Learned & Professional Society Publishers (ALPSP) and Cambridge University Press\, and scheduled for 17-18 May\, the conference will focus on the themes of diversity and sustainability\, and look at practical ways that presses can improve. \nAs well as ensuring the conference can go ahead despite the continuing challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic\, holding the event online will enable many more people around the world to attend. \nIn a further move to widen participation\, a number of free places will be offered to students\, to those in their early career and other publishing professionals without access to funding to attend meetings. The places are available to applicants anywhere in the world whether or not they work for an ALPSP member organisation. \nThe Press is programming the event\, which will include sessions on reducing the carbon footprint of the supply chain; the environmental impacts of business travel; how to embed a culture of equality\, diversity\, inclusion and belonging; and increasing digital accessibility. \nFor the second year\, the conference will also present the University Press Redux Sustainability Award\, which was launched in 2020 to recognise the work of university press publishers and others in addressing important global issues. \nThe prize is given to an initiative\, publication\, product or project aimed at addressing one or more of the 17 United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Among other things\, these cover poverty\, equality\, the environment\, and the pressing need to make real progress towards a sustainable and equitable future. The inaugural prize was won by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development for its SDG Pathfinder. \nWayne Sime\, Chief Executive of ALPSP\, said: “As ALPSP celebrates its 50th anniversary in 2022\, we look forward to bringing together University Press publishers to focus on issues of sustainability and diversity. The event promises to be a wonderful opportunity for us to discuss these timely issues. \n“It is also right that we take this opportunity to open the conversation to as many people as possible. These are issues which affect us all\, regardless of geography and with young people likely to face the worst impacts of climate change and biodiversity loss in the years to come.” \nBen Denne\, Director of Publishing for academic books at Cambridge University Press\, said: “Universities and University Presses are\, by nature\, mission-driven and these are challenging areas in which we should be leading the way. But often we are not doing enough\, or we are not doing enough fast enough to play our full part in building a diverse and sustainable future. \n“Many university presses are limited in size\, which comes with real challenges around diverse recruitment and the auditing of sustainability across a complex supply chain. With Redux 2022\, we will take a practical approach\, focus on implementation and not be afraid to ask the difficult questions.” \n\nTo find out more\, to register and to apply for the free places on offer\, visit the conference website. Book by 30 November 2021 for Early Bird discounted rates.

SUMMARY:EASE Editorial School for Journal Editors\, Module 3
DESCRIPTION:Module 3 of our Editorial School focusses on peer review process and production \nModule Summary\nThe peer review process is often considered to be the gold standard for journals\, and yet the operation of peer review remains one of the main headaches for many journal editors and their publishers. \nPeer review is frequently inefficient\, time-consuming and can fail to pick up article shortcomings. Whilst not promising to resolve a global problem\, this workshop will look at the various reviewing systems being used by different journals and will provide tips for how the main problems with peer review (timeliness\, quality and efficiency) can be reduced. \nThe workshop provides editors with the tools to make better decisions regarding the operation of peer review in their own journal\, and to reduce the burden whilst also improving the quality of feedback for authors \nCOURSE OVERVIEW \nThe course is held over four weeks\, with one module each week\, and is aimed at helping our member editors make their journals more visible\, impactful\, and full of engaging material. The four modules focus on key journal\, and personal\, developments and skills\,\naimed at helping editors: \n\nimprove the quality of editorial processes\nmanage ethical issues effectively\nenhance the efficiency of peer review and production processes\nsupport more successful promotional activities\ncomply with international standards\, and\nincrease the chances of successful indexing applications.\n\nThe training led (at the time of this event) by the course author\, Pippa Smart\, Past-President of EASE\, founder of PSP Consulting\, and Editor-in-Chief of Learned Publishing. \nThis course is particularly suitable for those in the early stages of their careers as an editor but will benefit members of all experiences\, involved in managing or planning journal. \nCourse brochure\nRegister now

SUMMARY:EASE Editorial School for Journal Editors\, Module 2
DESCRIPTION:Module 2: Publishing ethics for editors \nSession Summary \nPublishing ethics are a frequent concern for many journals\, and the issues range from small annoyances to large-scale problems which can have a dramatic negative impact on both the publications and the people involved. It is always better to avoid problems than to try and remedy them\, and this\nworkshop will consider strategies and policies journals can introduce to mitigate the possibility of ethical problems. \nThe workshop will consider some of the most common ethical issues such as duplicate and plagiarised publications\, author\, editor and reviewer ethics\, data and artwork manipulation and misinterpretation. The workshop will look at ways in which problems can be mitigated\, and how they (if they happen) can be resolved effectively and efficiently. \nCOURSE OVERVIEW \nThis brand new four-module online training course is exclusive to EASE members\, and has been designed in a collaboration between our Training Committee and our Regional Chapters. \nIt will be delivered simultaneously in four countries\, with local language support and moderation from our Chapter leadership to ensure the greatest accessibility and effectiveness of the training. \nThe course is held over four weeks\, with one module each week\, and is aimed at helping our member editors make their journals more visible\, impactful\, and full of engaging material.
