SUMMARY:2nd PEERE International Conference on Peer Review - postponed
DESCRIPTION:Please note that this conference has been postponed due to the COVID-19 situation. It is hoped that the conference can be rescheduled\, and we will provide more news as soon as it is available. \nImportant dates\n15 November 2019: Abstract & paper submission deadline\n10 January 2020: Notification to authors\n11-13 March 2020: Conference in Valencia \nScope \nFollowing the success of the 1st PEERE International Conference on Peer Review\, the PEERE COST Action follow-up community organises the second edition of the PEERE International Conference on Peer Review in Valencia on 11-13 March 2020. \nThe conference aims to provide a forum for scholars\, practitioners and science stakeholders to share research\, models\, tools and experience on peer review in different fields\, e.g.\, medicine\, computer science\, social sciences and humanities. It aims to stimulate the use of evidence-based research in the design and implementation of peer review in a variety of fields and encourage more systematic research. \nThe conference welcomes any contribution (e.g.\, original research\, position papers\, literature reviews) that uses any method (e.g.\, quantitative\, experimental or qualitative) to investigate peer review in a variety of scientific domains (e.g.\, scholarly journals\, funding agencies\, research assessment). Interdisciplinary research is especially welcome. \nMain topics of interest \nThe topics of interest to the conference include\, but are not limited to: \n• Quantitative and qualitative analysis of peer review in scholarly journals\, funding agencies and research assessment\n• Estimating editorial and reviewer bias\n• The impact of different peer review models (single vs. double blind\, confidential vs. open etc.) on reviewer attitudes and editorial decisions\n• Incentives\, motivation and recognition in peer review\n• Social network analysis of peer review and editorial policy\n• Models and theories of peer review: principles\, functions and management\n• Computer simulation studies of peer review dynamics and outcomes\n• Applications of bibliometrics\, altmetrics and scientometrics to peer review\n• Perspectives from policy makers\, grant funding agencies\, libraries and publishers\n• Peer review outside academia (e.g.\, private companies\, public sector\, online communities) \nSubmission \nWe encourage two types of submissions: full papers\, 10 to 12 pages\, single column\, max 8000 words or extended abstracts\,3 to 4 pages\, single column. Submissions should include title\, author(s)\, including affiliations and corresponding author address\, abstracts (in case of full papers)\, keywords\, text (including tables and figures) and references. \nSubmissions will be judged on their originality\, significance\, clarity\, relevance\, and technical correctness. Each submission will be peer -reviewed by at least two programme committee members. \nExternal reviewers will be used in case of lack of expertise of the programme committee members. \nThe peer review process will follow a single-blind procedure. \nTo manage submissions\, we use Easychair. To submit\, please click on this link: https://easychair.org/conferences/?conf=peerewic2020. \nThe submission deadline is 15 November 2019 and the deadline for acceptance notification is 10 January 2020. \nFor any information\, please\, contact us here. \nProgram committee chairs\nFrancisco Grimaldo (University of Valencia\, Spain)\nFlaminio Squazzoni (University of Milan\, Italy)\nAna Marusic (University of Split School of Medicine\, Croatia)

SUMMARY:Reward Equator Conference
DESCRIPTION:The 2020 REWARD | EQUATOR Conference will be hosted by the BIH QUEST Center. The meeting will take place in the Langenbeck-Virchow-Haus\, in the heart of historic Berlin\, from 20th to 22nd February 2020. \nThe conference theme – “Sharing strategies for Research Improvement” – for us represents an ambition to move beyond the articulation and description of problems\, to instead provide greater focus on possible solutions; their development\, testing\, evaluation and dissemination. We will consider challenges and opportunities for improvement from the perspective of Ethics Committees and Regulators\, Publishers\, Institutions and Researchers\, and Funders; and will have themes running through the conference on new methods for measuring and testing interventions. By involving communities beyond biomedical research we hope to broaden the discussion\, that we can learn from each others‘ experience. \nThe choice of the meeting venue enables us to come together under one roof with ample circulation areas to promote discussion. The agenda includes opportunities and facilities for ad hoc groups to form and to discuss specific issues arising during the conference\, with a view to establishing new collaborative networks. We are particularly keen to provide a platform for the next generation of research improvement researchers and practitioners\, and the agenda reflects this.

SUMMARY:Association of Earth Science Editors 53rd Annual Meeting\, Regina\, Saskatchewan 4-7 Sept 2019
DESCRIPTION:The 53rd annual meeting of the Association of Earth Science Editors will take place in Regina\, Saskatchewan\, September 4 to 7\, 2019. AESE meetings are a wonderful way to learn about earth science editing\, publishing and communication. Our meetings\, generally small in size\, consist of two days of technical sessions and a one-day field trip\, and provide an unparalleled opportunity to network with other editors\, publishers\, educators and others working in the earth sciences. \nNicknamed ‘The Queen City’\, Regina is the capital of the province of Saskatchewan\, one of the three ‘Prairie Provinces’ in Canada. Settled in 1882\, Regina was originally called ‘Wascana’\, a Cree term meaning ‘Pile of Bones’. Located roughly in the centre of the North American continent\, Regina is like an oasis of trees\, people and buildings in the heart of the Canadian prairies. With a population of over 230\,000\, it is the second-largest city in Saskatchewan\, and a cultural and entertainment destination for many in this part of the province. Wascana Centre\, the Royal Saskatchewan Museum\, the RCMP Heritage Centre\, and the iconic Legislative Building are just a few of the city’s attractions. \nThe meeting is open to anyone interested in earth science editing\, publishing and outreach. The program is in the initial planning stage\, but meeting information is now available on AESE’s web page www.aese.org. A Call for Abstracts will be issued mid Spring. We hope you’ll join us for what promises to be a great meeting. \nFor more information\, please contact meeting host Heather Brown (Saskatchewan Geological Survey)\, heather.brown4@gov.sk.ca\, or acting Chair of the Technical Program Committee Karen MacFarlane (Yukon Geological Survey)\, Karen.MacFarlane@gov.yk.ca. \n

SUMMARY:EuroScience Open Forum 2018
DESCRIPTION:The next EuroScience Open Forum (ESOF) will be held in Toulouse from 9 to 14 July 2018. ESOF is a biennial interdisciplinary general science meeting and the highlight of the European science calendar. \nESOF 2018 is constructed around the motto “Sharing science: towards new horizons”. Sharing science means bridging barriers between disciplines\, communities and countries\, making a link between generations\, encouraging and welcoming citizen aspirations and initiatives\, and being the anchor of a knowledge based society. \nSessions will focus on current and future path-breaking science and its ways of producing and sharing knowledge and innovation. ESOF includes all disciplines. At ESOF\, the word “science” is understood as encompassing the arts\, social sciences and humanities as well as physical and life sciences\, engineering and medicine. Science and technology are now embedded in a myriad of contexts\, greatly affecting the everyday life of people across virtually every corner of the globe. Many of the universal challenges of all societies are now pervaded by science and technology. We take into consideration transversal themes such as risk\, inequalities\, gender and ethics in the proposal for sessions\, inviting in particular interdisciplinary or transdisciplinary approaches from the social sciences and the humanities. \nVisit the ESOF website to find out more about the themes: https://www.esof.eu/en/scientific-programme.html

SUMMARY:International Colloquium: Monolingualism or Multilingualism in the Production and Dissemination of Science: Dynamics and Challenges
DESCRIPTION:The International Colloquium “Monolingualism or Multilingualism in the Production and Dissemination of Science: Dynamics and Challenges” calls for engagement in the debate through presentations. We invite you to participate! \nDownload the Call for Papers\, or read on!\nCall for Papers – Monolingualism or Multilingualism \n“In modern Western culture\, it is no longer a discourse that plays this role\, but rather a transport\,\n in other words\, a practice: writing. The origin is no longer what is narrated\, but rather\n the multiform and murmuring activity of producing a text and producing society as a text.\n “Progress” is scriptural in type.” \nMichel de Certeau\n \nLanguage and the Dissemination of Science\n\nThe development of links to incentivize international scientific cooperation is a\ncommon practice today in higher education and research. The role of language is important\nin this context\, where about one fourth of scientific production is carried out with\ninternational collaboration. Language has a role in allowing for or facilitating the\ncommunicative process among researchers and between researchers and the society that\ncontributes to science through public financing. While 86.5% of research needs are\nfinanced by industry itself in the countries of the Organization for Economic Cooperation\nand Development (OECD)\, state assistance to businesses conducting research is increasing.\nOn the other hand\, 35% of public research in the world takes place in non-OECD countries\,\nwhere 40% of researchers are concentrated. \nThe colloquium is intended for researchers and those responsible for the production and\ndissemination of scientific books and publications. Topics addressed will include the\nsustainable economics of international scientific collaboration\, the strategic roles of\nscientific journals and university publications in local and world markets\, the quality of\nscientific expression in non-native languages\, and the comparative effects of\nmonolingualism and multilingualism in the medium and short term. \nThe general objectives of the colloquium are: \n– To debate the role of language\, particularly the language of science\n– To analyze language\, culture\, and the diversity of thought\n– To examine science\, the transmission of scientific knowledge\, and development\n– To promote on line networking using different languages \nThe Colloquium proposes to organize the discussion into the following thematic focuses\,\nwhich may be reformulated depending on the nature of the proposals received: \n\nFocus 1: The languages of science\nThe work of editing\, publishing\, and disseminating scientific knowledge is arduous.\nDifferent constituencies recommend using just one language in order to receive higher\nevaluations from the many academic information systems that are used. But if our goal is to\nmake newly-produced knowledge available for debate in different contexts\, and keeping in\nmind that science seeks to improve the lives of human beings\, it is necessary to consider the\ndiversity of languages. \n1. Monolingualism or plurilingualism in the filed of science and higher education;\n– The field of science and higher education: production\, circulation\, and knowledge\ncreation;\n– Field models related to languages: monolingual and plurilingual proposals and\nexperiences. \n\nFocus 2: Language\, culture\, and the diversity of thought\nOne conception of culture is as a form of language that allows us to observe and analyze\nthe different forms of comprehension that allow human beings to understand their\nsurroundings\, and how these ways of understanding relate to each other (Clifford Geertz\,\n1983\, in Further Essays in Interpretive Anthropology\, New York\, Basic Books).\nThe global organization of a culture is then constituted in a group of interpretative schemes\nthat allow\, in this specific context\, to produce and perceive the social meanings of\nbehaviour of a given group\, and of the “objects” of the world\, categorized and built by\nlanguage and culture (Claude Clanet\, 1990\, Introduction aux approches interculturelles en\néducation et en sciences humaines\, Toulouse\, Presses Universitaires du Mirail). Different\nlanguages enrich the processes\, the meanings\, the symbolism\, and the actions of each social\ngroup\, and science is not extraneous to cultural processes. Thus\, our challenge is to\nstimulate a productive dialogue for scientific progress and development from the Tower of\nBabel\, preserving diversity. \n2. Diversity of languages\, scientific speeches and cultural models in science and higher\neducation\n– Higher education and college globalization: the language role;\n– Globalization of investigation models and publishing from the Anglo-Saxon space\nopposite to local Latin American models;\n– The role of knowledge\, epistemology and indigenous languages in the science and\nhigher education. \n\nFocus 3: Language: science\, transmission\, translation and development\nThe dissemination of scientific knowledge is a continuous challenge. The communication\nof high quality information to potential readers\, those interested in widening their\nknowledge through reliable sources of information such as academic publishers\, is even\nmore complex when one or another language must be chosen in which to do so. Publishing\nall such content in one language increases visibility and reputation while doing so in several\nlanguages may bring about dialogue\, diversity\, and inclusion. \n3. Writing and publishing in different languages: challenges and solutions\n– Higher education and college globalization: the role of the languages;\n– Demands and requisites of English as a foreign language in research and\ninternational relations;\n– Barriers and difficulties to publish in English and other foreign languages from\nscience and higher education in Latin America;\n– Evaluation: selection systems\, prioritization and exclusion of scientific publishing\nand its relation with the use of a certain language. \n \nRequirements for the presentations\n\n1. Proposals should be written in Spanish\, French\, Portuguese\, or English. They\nshould have tentative titles and be accompanied by abstracts of 550-650 words\n(4\,000-5\,000 characters). No more than one proposal will be accepted from any\nauthor. \n2. The proposal should indicate in which thematic focus the author wishes to\nparticipate\, with a brief explanation of why. SUMMARY:International Conference on Responsible Research and Innovation in Science\, Innovation and Society 2017
DESCRIPTION:The scientific research is more and more addressing a holistic and multidisciplinary approach in the perspective of the Responsible Research and Innovation\, aiming to anticipate and assess Implications and societal expectations and to foster the design of inclusive and sustainable research and innovation. \nMany researchers\, European initiatives and projects in different domains and contexts already started to address Responsible Research and Innovation (RRI) principles and themes\, but in the last years a wide discussion is arising on these topics that requires to systematically share information and knowledge. \nThe annual conferences organised within the activities of the MARINA project (the project has received funding from the European Union’s Horizon 2020 Research and Innovation Programme under GA No. 710566) are the best occasion to reach and federate diverse targeted RRI groups and discuss with them case studies and experiences on RRI principles and themes starting from the marine domain\, but not limited to it. These conferences are launched also for reinforcing the RRI community identity to be built according to the final resolution of  the conference of Rome in 2014 “SIS-RRI: Science\, Innovation and Society: achieving Responsible Research and Innovation”. \nThe International Conference on Responsible Research and Innovation in Science\, Innovation and Society (RRI-SIS2017) is the first annual conference of the MARINA project that aims at presenting the cases studies highlighting environmental preservation\, RRI issues\, principles and topics related with the research and innovation in the context of the H2020 societal challenges. The concept of Responsible Research and Innovation is relatively recent and it is part of the Europe 2020 strategy with the objective to promote a vision for a stronger collaboration among social\, natural and physical scientists\, societal actors and citizens in order to achieve a wider dimension of science and innovation and improve the role of society in environmental preservation. With this focus the conference will cover and systematise these themes and will help fill the gap in the present literature. \nThe conference overall aim is to establish\, organise and activate a Responsible Research and Innovation community which involves scientists and societal actors working together during the whole research and innovation process with the common goals of aligning both the process and its outcomes with the values\, needs and expectations of the society and integrating citizens visions\, needs and desires into science and innovation. Case studies and experiences will be collected and presented in the conference proceedings so providing an overview of several cases and experiences on Responsible Research and Innovation performed in several past and running projects on RRI. \n  \nThe proceedings will be composed of the following sections: \n\n\nGovernance\, Public engagement and Inclusion in the responsible R&D and Innovation process \n\n\nRRI actions in science education and communication \n\n\nGender and Ethical issues in RRI initiatives \n\n\nSustainability of RRI processes
