Social networks are now an integral part of our everyday life. They are used not only for private communication and connecting with loved ones, but also for business purposes – from advertising to selling products and services. In addition to the general ones, there are also a number of specialized networks, including those intended for scientists and scientific communication. Altmetrics is no longer such a new term, but it is related precisely to the emergence of social networks and open access to scientific works. Unlike most traditional metrics, altmetrics relies precisely on numerical data about the scientific work (article) itself and includes, for example, engagement on social networks, downloads from repositories and mentions in online media.
In the webinar, the advantages and disadvantages of using altmetric methods were discussed and the most famous altmetric tools were presented, together with the examples of the use of these tools and social networks in a scientific context, both in Croatia and in the world. The guidelines on how to use certain tools and the possibilities of their application in scientific publishing were also provided.
