THE MYSTERIES OF MEDICAL PUBLISHING

Thursday, 4 April 2024 3pm Italy/GMT

Over five million scientific articles are published every year, with thirty thousand journals indexed in international databases. One hundred and thirty million hours of unpaid work by doctors and researchers for peer review that is now showing signs of dying. Ten thousand withdrawn articles. Behind these figures is an industry valued at around 30 billion dollars that generates profits comparable to IT giants. “The state of scientific publishing has never been more precarious than it is today,” says Richard Horton, editor of the Lancet. The meeting aims to discuss these issues through the insights offered by the Italian chapter EASE member Luca De Fiore, in his new book “Sul pubblicare in medicina” (On publishing in medicine).
