Workshop: How to be a successful journal editor

Tuesday, 13 May 2025 9.00am-3.25pm (local time)

The Legenes Hus Conference Centre, Oslo, Norway and online

This fully interactive workshop offered Editors of scholarly journals best practice guidance to, strategic planning and development ideas to address key issues of journal editing.

Aimed at editors, editorial office staff and publishers, the course allowed participants to identify and plan changes to their own journals to increase their presence and impact in their fields, discuss initiatives and debate the challenges faced in running high quality titles.

The course incorporated a wide range of activities and strategies involved in high quality, competitive publishing, including:

Fundamentals of quality journals
Even if a journal has a high-quality editorial structure it can still fail if the publication practices are sub-standard. This workshop looked at the international standards that all journals must implement to help your editorial teamwork effectively, and help any researcher quickly identify the journal as a trusted publication.

Editorial team and board development
This element of the course helped you get the most from your Editorial Boards, identify potential members, establish healthy, constructive and productive relationships, and make provisions for long-term succession planning.

Peer review
The bedrock of quality publishing is quality peer review. This part of the workshop provided a forum to discuss different aspects of peer review, common struggles, how to engage reviewers, and effective workflows.

What to use to guide strategic journal development
Practical techniques for analysing the field of your journal, identifying developing trends in subject areas and author activity, as well as competitor journals or publishers; assess their strengths and weaknesses in activity and contrast them with your own journal to build development plans.

Indexing and bibliometrics
Being indexed in high profile databases is a crucial goal to enhance the impact of a journal and this section of the workshop ensured that participants fully understood how the major international indexes operate, what the metrics mean, and how they should be used responsibly.

Marketing and promotion techniques and tools
This part of the course aimed to inspire new ways of thinking about designing and circulating promotional materials and creating a visible and engaging presence for your journal, and help you combine social media strategies with traditional marketing activities to create effective promotional campaigns.

Developing a journal strategy
This part of the course helped you create a development strategy that can be implemented into the every-day work of a journal to ensure that the journal is the best that it can be and you and your teams are always working towards achieving your goals.
