Dr Barry Gilder is a professional editor, proofreader, author and researcher working with clients in the United Kingdom, South Africa and across the European Union. He holds a BA in English and Philosophy, an MA in Creative Writing, and a PhD in Creative Writing from the University of the Witwatersrand.

Barry works with academic authors, researchers, non-fiction writers, memoirists and publishers, providing developmental editing, copy-editing, proofreading and manuscript assessment services through Amazwi Creatives. His recent work has included scholarly books, public policy publications, memoirs and trade non-fiction.

He is a Professional Member of the Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading (CIEP), a member of the Professional Editors’ Guild (South Africa), and a member of the European Association of Science Editors (EASE).

Barry is also the author of three published books, including the award-winning novel At Fire Hour, winner of the 2024 South African Literary Award for Best Novel.
