Marie McVeigh is currently part of the Research Integrity & Publishing Ethics team at Elsevier. Her work manages individual and larger-scale investigations of published papers, from initial identification through resolution (no-action, correction of the record, retraction). She was a member of NISO RP-45-2024, Communication of Retractions, Removals, and Expressions of Concern (CREC) working group (https://www.niso.org/publications/rp-45-2024-crec), but her career has spanned nearly every part of the scholarly communications lifecycle, as an author and reviewer, from bench science, to Peer Review Operations (Mary Ann Liebert, Inc.), from Journal Selections (Clarivate, Thomson Reuters, ISI) to Journal metrics (Thomson Reuters, Elsevier, Clarivate). The emergence of papermills, citation manipulation, false or fraudulent peer review, and questions of authorship contribution are evolving phenomena with old roots. Marie’s long and diverse career provides a unique perspective onto the integrated stakeholders and systems that are needed to meet these new challenges.
