To raise awareness and improve ethical practices in scientific publishing in Vietnam, a research group from the Institute for Research on Education and Knowledge Transfer (REK Institute), Thanh Do University, in collaboration with the Vietnam Chapter of the European Association of Science Editors (EASE), is undertaking the translation of key guidelines from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE) into Vietnamese.
COPE is an international non-profit organization, established in 1997 in the UK by a small group of medical journal editors. By 2022, the organization had over 13,000 members worldwide, including editors, publishers, and individuals interested in academic publication ethics across all fields. COPE’s objective is to define and promote best practices in publication ethics, while also supporting those involved in publishing in achieving these standards.
With a motto of education and support rather than criticism, COPE provides resources such as guidelines, flowcharts, discussion documents, and online courses so that researchers, editors, publishers, peer reviewers, and other individuals/organizations involved in scholarly publishing can assess their adherence to the “Core Practices” proposed by the organization. According to COPE, publication ethics is a pivotal factor in maintaining the honesty and reliability of research, contributing to making scientific knowledge trustworthy and capable of advancing societal progress.
Materials under COPE’s Guidance and Resources section are published under the CC BY-NC-ND 4.0 license, allowing free sharing but prohibiting derivatives and commercial use. However, after discussion, COPE representatives officially granted permission for the project team to translate and publish the Vietnamese versions, demonstrating trust and support from this international organization for the initiative to promote publication ethics in Vietnam.
The translation team include: Linh-Chi Nguyen; Ha-Chi Ta; Tran-Dieu-Anh Nguyen; Xuan-Thanh Nghiem; Duc-Binh Do; Huong-Giang Bui; Ngoc-Diep Nguyen; Bao-Chau Linh; Phuong-Ly Nguyen; Quynh-Huong Ngo; Hung-Hiep Pham; Thi-Thanh-Thao Phan
