Thirteen years after its launch, ORCID has been integrated in hundreds of research systems and is used by millions of researchers and contributors, making it a powerful tool for author identification. But, despite important developments such as the recent introduction of trust markers in ORCID records, its full potential as a tool for improving research integrity has not yet been realized. In this session, Alice Meadows used the framework of a strategic SWOT to analyse ORCID, identifying strategies and tactics that the scholarly publishing community could use to capitalise on the identifier’s strengths and improve on its weaknesses, and to ensure that the opportunities it provides are taken advantage of and threats are minimised.
