Peer Review Across Borders and Technologies: Localizing the EASE Toolkit in the AI Era

In a time when AI technologies are transforming academic publishing, the European Association of Science Editors (EASE) brings together experts to explore how foundational tools – like the EASE Peer Review Toolkit – can help support ethical, transparent, and context-aware review practices.

The session opened with remarks from Jadranka Stojanovski, EASE Croatia, who offered concise, practical guidance on peer review roles, responsibilities, and dilemmas. Iva shared how the Toolkit is being used to train reviewers and editors across diverse settings.

Speakers from EASE chapters, and others discussed how the Toolkit was translated and adapted to national systems, including how reviewers navigate cultural, linguistic, and now technological shifts, such as the integration of AI tools into the review process.

This event was free and open to all.

Introduction to the EASE Peer Review Toolkit

Speaker: Jadranka Stojanovski (EASE Croatia)

The EASE Peer Review Toolkit provides a curated collection of practical guidance and resources, designed to support and educate editors, reviewers, and authors on all aspects of peer review, including reviewer selection, assessment, rewards, ethics, and effective feedback. Organized by user role (general guides, reviewer-specific content, and editor-focused tools), it aims to foster high-quality and ethical peer review practices through clear, accessible materials such as checklists, infographics, and guidelines.

Localization and adaptation of the Toolkit

Speakers: EASE Ukraine, EASE Croatia, EASE Macedonian Chapter, EASE India and EASE Turkey.

Presentations will focus on how the Toolkit has been translated and adapted to various national contexts. Speakers will also discuss challenges and solutions in navigating cultural, linguistic, and technological shifts, including AI integration in peer review.

Peer Review Guidelines and Practices: Insights from Croatian Journal Editors

Speaker: Ivana Morić Filipović (Vice Chair of EASE Croatia)

This presentation reports on a short survey of Croatian journal editors and reviewers. The survey aimed to understand current practices, explore awareness of EASE resources such as the Peer Review Toolkit and the Recommendations on the Use of AI in Scholarly Communication, and examine whether AI tools are being used and for what purposes, in order to identify opportunities for responsible peer review in the era of AI.

AI Tools in Peer Review: Key Insights from EASE India

Speaker: Roohi Ghosh (Vice Chair of EASE India)

Roohi Ghosh will provide insights into how AI tools are being integrated into the peer review process, discussing their potential benefits, practical applications, and the challenges editors and reviewers may encounter. The talk will highlight emerging trends and share experiences from the Indian context.

Peer review in Macedonian scientific journals

Speaker: Mirko Spiroski (Chair of EASE Macedonian Chapter)

Mirko Spiroski will outline the current state of peer review practices in Macedonian scientific journals, addressing modes and models of review as well as existing challenges. He will underscore the importance of establishing clear guidelines and highlight recent initiatives, including the registration of the Macedonian Association of Scientific Communication.

From Translation to Practice: Reviewers’ Role in Strengthening Research Integrity in Turkey

Speaker: Yasin Hasan Balcioglu (Chair of EASE Turkey)

Yasin will share insights from the Turkish translation process of the EASE toolkit and highlight key takeaways from the latest Turkish Chapter webinar on research integrity, with a special focus on how reviewers’ role in upholding research integrity in scholarly publishing.

Using EASE Peer-Review Tools to Transform Ukraine’s Academic Publishing Landscape

Speaker: Iryna Izarova, Chair of EASE Regional Chapter Committee, Chair of EASE Ukraine.

Iryna Izarova will discuss how EASE Peer Review Tools are being applied to strengthen Ukraine’s academic publishing system. She will highlight their role in promoting transparency, improving editorial practices and supporting journals in times of profound challenges and redefining of academic publishing in Ukraine.
