Summer Symposium Partner Event

ISMTE – Harnessing Community and Innovation to Strengthen Standards in Peer Review

Wednesday, 3 June 2026 4pm-5.30pm

In this interactive 90-minute session, we provide a comprehensive overview of the various community efforts and other innovative approaches aimed at strengthening quality and standards in peer-review.

Strong peer review depends on strong communities but building and sustaining these communities requires more than good intentions. The first part of this session will therefore focus on what it takes to move beyond principles with firsthand experience and practical advice from our expert panel of speakers. Each will provide their unique insights as they share their knowledge and case studies offering a candid look at what it takes to build sustainable researcher communities around journals – what’s working, what isn’t, and what others can learn from them. Amongst the topics covered will be working in partnership with societies towards next-generation training, as well as considerations for DEI (Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion) and global equity for a richer and more sustainable peer reviewer community.

The second part of the session will take the form of a roundtable discussion where we are joined by a panel of experienced Editors, Authors, Reviewers and Publishers sharing their individual vantage points as they consider how innovation is reshaping the editorial ecosystem including the future of peer-review. Amongst the questions considered will be how academics are using AI tools for writing and reviewing, plus other pertinent questions regarding research ethics and integrity beyond peer review, such as conflicts of interests and disclosures.

This event is organised by ISMTE. It is free and open to all.

Please note this session was not recorded.
