Webinar: ‘Research integrity for journal editors’

Wednesday, 31 August 2022 (4pm UK – 6pm Ukraine)

This webinar was organised by the Ukrainian Regional Chapter of EASE. Speaker, Dr Joan Marsh, described the key features of good editorial office practice, based on the Ethics toolkit from the Committee on Publication Ethics (COPE), with illustrations from her own experience as Deputy Editor and now Editor-in-Chief of The Lancet Psychiatry, where relevant.

Joan covered:

  • the need for clear and transparent processes and business practices;
  • requirements for authorship and contributorship;
  • peer review processes, including what is peer reviewed, what model of peer review is used and how the process is managed;
  • responding to allegations of research, publication, and review misconduct;
  • what, and how, conflicts of interest must be disclosed by authors, reviewers, and editors;
  • requirements for data availability, use of reporting guidelines, and registration of studies;
  • guidelines on the ethical conduct of research, according to the research discipline;
  • copyright and publishing licences, author or reader fees;
  • the business model for running the journal;
  • management of post-publication debate, corrections and retractions;
  • handling complaints against the journal, its staff, editorial board or the publisher.

The session was followed by a Q&A. Iryna Izarova, chair of the Ukrainian Chapter, translated Joan’s slide deck and provided language support.

Joan Marsh is the Editor-in-Chief of The Lancet Psychiatry. Joan was on the Council of the European Association of Science Editors for 12 years, including six as President. She is now Chair of its Gender Policy Committee and an Associate Editor of European Science Editing.
