On 18 June 2025, the webinar “Paper Mills: Why Higher Education Institutions Should Avoid Collaboration with Questionable Partners?” brought together over 300 participants (from over 700 registrations) — a strong call for action to protect academic integrity.
Organized in collaboration with DOAJ, the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, EASE Ukraine, EIFL, Taras Shevchenko National University of Kyiv, and the State Scientific and Technical Library of Ukraine, the webinar provided insights into the harmful influence of predatory publishing and paper mills on scholarly communication.

From the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, Hryhorii Mozolevych outlined the official stance against predatory practices in academia.

DOAJ representatives Iemima Ploscariu and Yuliia Hartman (EASE Ukraine member) presented the Ukrainian translation of the DOAJ guide on transparent publishing practices — now available to all Ukrainian HEIs.

Prof. Dorothy Bishop (University of Oxford) revealed the inner workings of paper mills and their devastating impact on scholarly communication.

Prof. Dr. Iryna Izarova (EASE Ukraine) provided actionable recommendations for editors and researchers to uphold high ethical standards. She also emphasized key criteria for identifying hijack journals and the urgent need for continuous education for researchers and editorial teams.
