IUMRS Survey on the Evolution of Scientific Publishing

The International Union of Materials Research Societies (IUMRS) has launched a survey on the Evolution of Scientific Publishing, and have requested we circulate it to our members, colleagues and beyond.

We have completed this survey ourselves, and are very happy to endorse the aims and scope of this project.

IUMRS is a member of the International Science Council, and is composed of individual professional societies in the materials research field from all around the globe; but with this survey, the Union wishes to receive responses from a broader spectrum of researchers, from many fields of science as well as from professionals associated with all aspects of scientific publishing such as editors, publishers, educators, librarians, archivists, sponsors of research, experts in intellectual property, and managers of research at corporate and government laboratories.

The Survey is anonymous and should take no more than 5 to 15 minutes to complete, with a varying range of questions depending on the respondent’s relationship to scientific publishing. For example, for a researcher who publishes in journals and/or conference proceedings, there are 22 questions. For an editorial or production team member of a publishing company, university press or learned society that produces scientific journals there are 16 questions.

The IUMRS intends for this survey to provide a much needed perspective on the state of scientific publishing today and on what we might expect for the future. The results will be summarized and published once a suitable number of responses have been received.

On behalf of EASE and the IUMRS, we thank you very much for your help with this IUMRS undertaking.
