Implementing a diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility strategy: Lessons learned at five scholarly communications organizations

DEIA (Diversity, Equity, Inclusion and Accessibility) are essential in scholarly publishing. This paper describes the efforts of five small scholarly organizations to implement DEIA.  In particular, American Chemical Society, Atla, Benetech, Elsevier and NISO are analyzed. In conclusion, Authors suggest a series of recommendations to improve DEIA. These include: establishing a committee on DEIA issues, focusing on one or two areas of improvement, learning from concrete and small initiatives, and recognizing that this process may not be easy.
