Using AI to write scholarly publications, Accountability in Research

Artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly finding its way into publishing industry and scientific publishing is no different. Natural language processing (NLP) systems, such as OpenAI’s generative pre-trained transformer (GPT) model may soon be widely used. In their Editorial, Hosseini and colleagues show, with many examples, how NLP systems can generate a text from a specific query. While sometimes this text can be informative and coherent, in other cases the generated text can be incorrect. Thus, even if NLP can be used to generate scientific papers, their use must always be disclosed and every generated section of a manuscript should be checked for accuracy, bias, relevance, and reasoning.
