EASE India webinar: Behind the Pages: Insights from Running an Editorial Office in India
Thursday, 21 August 2025
Editorial offices function as behind-the-scenes hubs and form the backbone of scholarly publishing. They play a key role in the operations of academic journals, overseeing numerous functions such as article and publication management, peer review, editing, outreach and reporting.
In this session, we considered how editorial offices function and contribute at various stages of the publication process. Our speakers brought their experiences as career copyeditors working in small journal editorial offices, and discussed the skills required in the running of an editorial office. As with other aspects of academia, editorial offices and scholarly publishing in the Global North and Global South often differ, especially with regard to access to knowledge and resources. The session provided insights into the specific context of small editorial offices in India, which may also align with perspectives and experiences of publishing professionals from the Global South.
Whether participants are considering or are already working in a journal’s editorial office, this session helped them to gain insights into the behind-the-scenes work—from submission to publication—of small journal editorial offices, to learn about key skills needed to effectively manage editorial workflows, and come together to share experiences that may resonate with those of other similar publishing professionals from the Global South.
