Editage event: Visual communication in medical visualisation with focus on metaphors

Thursday, 5 December 2024 1pm GMT

This insightful session will help you understand how to leverage visualizations to enhance science communication. This webinar will explore the use of 3D models, illustrations, and other visual tools, emphasizing their impact on effectively conveying complex scientific concepts. Hana Pokojná will talk about her groundbreaking research on visual metaphors in scientific infographics. Drawing from the linguistic Conceptual Metaphor Theory by Lakoff and Johnson, the study redefines how structural, ontological, orientational, and imagistic metaphors can be applied in visualizations across biomedical, space, anthropology, and climate science domains. Whether you’re a researcher, communicator, or design enthusiast, this session will inspire you to rethink how visuals can transform scientific storytelling. Don’t miss this chance to explore the intersection of linguistics and visual design!

Speaker

Hana Pokojná

Researcher, Masaryk UniversityCzech Republic

Hana Pokojná is in the final stages of finishing her PhD with a focus on visual storytelling in biomedicine at the Faculty of Informatics at Masaryk University (Czechia). She has previously completed MSc in Medical Visualisation (graduating in 2019) and has since been involved with MedvVis-related topics in academia. These topics were often interdisciplinary, crossing over to visualisation and human-computer interaction through different media, including, for example, illustration and 3D printing. She will talk about her recent publication about utilisation of visual metaphors in scientific infographics "The Language of Infographics: Toward Understanding Conceptual Metaphor Use in Scientific Storytelling ".
