Vacancy for Academic Language Editor

 

Job Title: Academic Language Editor (in-house)

Location:  Remote/UK

Reporting to:  Operations Director

Basis:   Full-time (two roles available)

Are you interested in supporting academics in publishing cutting-edge scientific research? Do you have a background in STM research and a passion for clearly communicated science?

We are currently looking for meticulous and highly motivated individuals to fill the role of Academic Language Editor. We are looking for generalist editors with a strong editing and research background in medical sciences, physical sciences, or engineering. The role can be remote based, preferably within the UK, though other regions globally would be considered for the right candidate.

The Role

Our Academic Language Editors have a strong background in academic research and exemplary language editing skills. Your work will involve improve the quality of language in academic manuscripts authored by ESL speakers.

The position entails delivering a high volume of consistently high-quality edits, editing at the sentence level, and formatting to specific journal requirements. Successful candidates will require a combination of strong editing and time management skills as well as expertise in a specific field of study.

The following (which may be subject to change from time to time) comprise the core aspects of the role:

Key activities and responsibilities

  • Edits academic manuscripts written by ESL authors to improve the style, clarity, and readability of the research
  • Where specified, edits manuscript formatting to meet the target journal requirements
  • Adheres to workflow-specific quality standards, volume targets and deadlines
  • Communicates with our customer service and editing teams as needed to serve our customers in line with team expectations
  • Supports in the assessment and recruitment of talented editors to our pool of freelance editors
  • Supports in company projects and initiatives relevant to improving the efficacy and efficiency of our editing activity and processes
  • Provides ad hoc editorial support to the wider department as required

 

Key attributes/requirements:

  • PhD or equivalent qualification within an STM field
  • Excellent writing and research skills
  • An average editing/proofreading speed of 1,000–1,500 words per hour
  • Ability to edit and proofread a broad range of documents, including technical, scientific, and/or medical materials
  • In-depth knowledge of one or more style guides (e.g., APA, the Chicago Manual of Style) is an asset
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team
  • Extremely strong time management skills
  • Passionate about helping researchers successfully communicate their work

Desirable

  • Experience using LaTeX.
