Where to publish studies on peer review

The following is a list of scholarly journals researchers could consider for publication of studies on peer review. As many journals published studies on peer review in the past, and some had special issues on peer review, this list is not exhaustive. Researchers can also exploring the systematic reviews published on peer review and check where studies included in those reviews were published. We would, however, strongly recommend researchers first register or publish protocols (or register reports) for studies on peer review, before posting the completed studies as preprints, or publishing them in journals. 

Journals to consider:

European Science Editing
European Science Editing is the official journal of the European Association of Science Editors (EASE). It is an open access peer-reviewed journal that publishes original research, review and commentary on all aspects of scientific, scholarly editing and publishing.

Research Integrity and Peer Review
RIPR is an open access peer-reviewed journal published by BMC (Springer-Nature) that focuses on studies related to research integrity, study reporting, and peer review. RIPR’s Co-Editor-in-Chief is Mario Malički (current PRC Committee Member). RIPR employs and publishes open peer reports.

Other journals (in alphabetical order):

BMJ Open

The journal publishes research from all medical disciplines, including research study types, from protocols through phase I trials to meta-analyses, including small, specialist studies, and negative studies. The journal operates a fully open peer review and it publishes reviewer reports and previous versions of manuscripts as pre-publication histories. 

eLife 

The journal considers articles reporting meta-research, research that studies research practices, including scholarly publications.

F1000 research

The journal publishes sound science under the transparent peer review process. 

Journal of Informetrics

Journal of Informetrics (JOI) publishes rigorous high-quality research on quantitative aspects of information science. The main focus of the journal is on topics in bibliometrics, scientometrics, webometrics, patentometrics, altmetrics and research evaluation. Learned Publishing

Learned Publishing publishes articles on all aspects of scholarly communication and publishing, and it’s aimed at a readership of publishers, vendors, librarians, academics and researchers.

PEERJ

A multidisciplinary open access journal that focuses on methodological soundness rather than subjective considerations of impact or novelty.

PLOS Biology

The journal has a dedicated meta-research section that considers research on research studies, including research into publication practices and peer review.

PLOS ONE

The journal publishes sound science under the transparent peer review process. 

Publications

Publications is an open access peer-reviewed journal on scholarly publishing, published quarterly online by MDPI. 

Science and Engineering Ethics

Science and Engineering Ethics is a Transformative Journal (TJ) that focuses on exploring ethical issues associated with science and engineering. Published by Springer-Nature. 

Scientometrics

A hybrid journal for all Quantitative Aspects of the Science of Science, Communication in Science and Science Policy. Published by Springer-Nature.
