EASE Nordic Webinar: Fostering research integrity by the promotion of equity, fairness and diversity

There have been calls recently by a diverse range of research stakeholders to strengthen efforts to promote equity, fairness and diversity in research particularly (but not only) in collaborations between the Global North and South. The 7^th World Conference on research Integrity took place in Cape Town in 2022. This was the first time the conference was hosted in Africa with a theme of Research Integrity in an unequal world. Discussions both before during and after the conference made it clear that a lack of fairness and diversity in research could impact negatively on the integrity of research in a number of ways. The outcome of these deliberations is the Cape Town Statement on fostering research integrity through fairness and equity, published via a commentary in Nature in March 2023.

This webinar provided an overview of the conversations and deliberations that led up to the statement. Our speaker, Lyn Horn, considered why a lack of fairness, equity and diversity is a research integrity matter and looked at the various ways research integrity can be undermined if ignored, focussing in on on authorship and publication. She wrapped up by looking particularly at ways  journal editors can support the values and action items articulated in the Cape Town Statement.
