Session 4 – Pre-peer review manuscript assessment

Session 4.1

Saturday, 25 June 2.00pm – 3.15pm (Valencia time)

Should this manuscript go out for peer review? An editor’s perspective

David’s talk will review the decisions made upon receipt of a manuscript in the editorial office of Journal of Ecology. The ‘inside-out’ approach to manuscript assessment will be presented. Issues to be covered will include determining if the manuscript is formatted appropriately and in scope for the journal, gauging the extent of any plagiarism, spotting features in a submission that may hint at fraudulent authorship, and how to communicate these issues to authors in a fair and constructive way. Criteria used for desk-rejections will be reviewed, along with the determination of the most appropriate handling editors. Examples of problems found in manuscripts that are not advanced to peer review will be highlighted.

Who should attend?
Manuscript editors, journal editors, authors, publication team members.
