  • October 2022 – Article, Guidelines The Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) guidelines: Implementation and checklist development The Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) guidelines, published in 2016, have been widely endorsed, but few scientific journals and organizations have incorporated them into formal editorial guidance and publication policies. To facilitate monitoring of and adherence to the SAGER guidelines in Lancet journals, their team carried out an informal pilot study and developed a checklist to enable rapid editorial checks, promote uptake of the guidelines by other editors and journals, and raise awareness among peer reviewers and authors. By using this checklist as part of manuscript assessment and peer-review processes, journal editors can support best reporting practices when considering sex and gender as variables, improving the generalizability of the research they publish.

  • May 2021 – Training, Webinar EASE Member Webinar: Sex and gender considerations in research There is a growing recognition of the poor reporting of sex and gender dimensions of research in academic journals, resulting in gender knowledge gap. To address this, the EASE Gender Policy Committee developed the Sex and Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) guidelines, which has been adopted by a number of journals and publishers and translated in several other languages. This workshop, co-organised with GENDRO, presents the rationale for sex and gender considerations in research, provides an overview of the SAGER guidelines and offers concrete steps on how authors, reviewers and editors can improve gender reporting in scholarly research and publication. Speaker: Dr Shirin Heidari, President, GENDRO and Founding chair EASE Gender Policy Committee EASE Members - you can access the recording of this webinar in the Resource Library https://ease.org.uk/resources/ease-webinar-sex-and-gender-considerations-in-research-with-shirin-heidari/ Non-members - you can purchase the recording of this webinar from the EASE Shop https://ease.org.uk/product/ease-webinar-sex-and-gender-considerations-in-research/

  • June 2016 – Article Sex And Gender Equity in Research (SAGER): reporting guidelines as a framework of innovation for an equitable approach to gender medicine Sex and gender are important determinants of health and influence research findings in variety of ways, yet they are often overlooked and underreported. This oversight limits the generalisability of research findings and their applicability to clinical practice. The objective of this paper is to point out how journal editors can influence better reporting of sex and gender in research by establishing a methodological framework directly addressing vuthors of scientific publications, as well as referees, and indirectly affecting all the stakeholders in the research cycle, from funders to policy-makers and citizens. Such framework is represented by the Sex And Gender Equity in Research (SAGER) guidelines, developed by the European Association of Science Editors (EASE) to encourage a more systematic approach to the reporting of sex and gender in research across disciplines. The paper includes the rationale and basic principles of the SAGER guidelines.
